Defense, rebounding help Parchment to district win

Wednesday, March 10, 2004

Gazette Staff Reports

SOUTH HAVEN -- Parchment got the jump on Otsego at the outset, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-2 in the first quarter, and went on to a 55-39 Class B district basketball victory here Tuesday night in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

Paw Paw turned back South Haven, 66-60, in the first game.

Parchment turned up the defensive pressure and controlled the backboards against Otsego. "We had 32 rebounds, and that's the first time we've had over 30 this season," said Parchment coach Larry Bailey. "We talked about having to get on the glass in the tournament and that was a big advantage tonight."

Alex Wolf, Parchment's sophomore guard, scored a game-high 15 points. And another sophomore, 6-foot-4 Austin Patton, added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Kyle Pfost, a 6-5 senior center, pulled down eight rebounds for the Panthers, who were up 27-12 at halftime. Garey Buck was Otsego's (4-17) top scorer with eight points. Parchment (10-11) will play Plainwell Thursday night at 8 in a district semifinals game.
