WMU versus K-College (exhibition)

Broncos Smash Hornets in Exhibition Opener, 87-40

KALAMAZOO – Western Michigan opened its exhibition season with a convincing victory, 87-40, against Kalamazoo College in front of 2,121 fans at University Arena Thursday night. Leading by eight at intermission, Western Michigan came out in the second half on a 24-2 run by hitting 10 of its first 15 shots to extend the lead to 30, 58-28. From that point forward the Hornets never got closer than 29 points. The Broncos shot 57.9 percent in the second half and held the Hornets to just 19.2 percent shooting in outscoring them 53-14 in the second half.

The Broncos started off the game with a 15-2 run and never trailed. WMU cooled off as the first half went on and the Hornets battled back to get as close as six, 29-23. WMU’s defense forced K-College into 23 turnovers with only three assists, while also holding them to 25.9 percent shooting and just 1-for-21 shooting from behind the arc. The Broncos led the Hornets in points off turnovers, 25-9, second chance points, 20-9, and fast break points, 19-2.

Sophomore Shawntés Gary led the Broncos with 14 points, including 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Sophomore Michael Redell and junior Derek Fracalossi contributed 10 points apiece. All 13 players the Broncos played scored at least three points. Freshman Donald Lawson led Western Michigan with nine rebounds and preseason all-MAC selection Joe Reitz finished the game with nine points and eight rebounds.

Juniors Matt Wagner and Pat Clancy led the Hornets with seven points each. Sophomore Henry McCain contributed six points and seven rebounds. Western Michigan plays its final exhibition game Saturday Nov. 4th versus Mount Vernon Nazarene at 12:30 p.m. at University Arena.
