KALAMAZOO -- Behind another balanced scoring effort, the Western Michigan men's basketball team won its second exhibition game, 86-51, beating Mount Vernon Nazarene in front of 1,162 fans at University Arena. Sophomore Derek Drews led three Broncos in doubles figures with 14 points. Junior Silver Laku added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and and junior Joe Reitz narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Broncos ran away from the Cougars in the second half. After leading by 16 at halftime, 39-23, despite only two fast break points, WMU outscored MVNU 31-2 in second half fast break points. The Brown & Gold also outrebounded the Cougars, 49-32, on their way to a 21-11 advantage in second chance points and a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint. Defensively, WMU held Mt. Vernon Nazarene to only 29.3 percent shooting (17-of-58) and just 4-of-22 behind the three-point line. The Broncos hit 50 percent of their total shots (32-of-64) and 11-of-27 three-pointers.
Sophomore point guards Andre Ricks and Michael Redell combined for 12 assists. Freshman Martelle McLemore added nine points, six rebounds and two steals and junior Andrew Hershberger was perfect (3-of-3 from the field, 2-of-2 from the free throw line) on his way to eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Ben Falkenberg led all scorers with 23 points for the Cougars. The Broncos open the 2006-07 season on Nov. 12 in West Point, N.Y., against No. 5 Pittsburgh in the Maggie Dixon Classic at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
