Late Surge Not Enough For Titans
www.detroittitans.com

Three Titans scored in double figures and UDM staged a ferocious comeback, but it was not enough as Detroit was upended by Western Michigan, 60-59, in a non-conference affair on Monday night. UDM fell to 1-2 on the season, while WMU improved to 3-2 on the year. Down by 12, 50-38, with 8:24 left, UDM's defense once again came to life forcing five turnovers and just two free throws as the Titans stormed back with a 14-2 spurt over the next six minutes to knot the game at 52-52. Sophomore Josh Samarco scored six points in that span, but it was junior Chris Hayes' second 3-pointer of the run that tied the game with 2:09 left.

Western Michigan regained the lead as Joe Reitz hit two free throws and added a lay-up to put the visitors ahead, 56-52. The Titans cut the deficit to two, twice, but WMU was perfect down the stretch from the free throw line (4-of-4), to earn the hard-fought victory. Trailing 7-4 three minutes into the game, the Titans exploded for 14 straight points in a 16-2 run to take a 20-9 lead. Samarco fueled the offensive surge with two 3-pointers, while classmate Eulis Stephens netted two baskets in the paint. The UDM defense caused four turnovers and held the Broncos to just one shot from the field.

After WMU cut the lead to seven, 22-15, a three by senior Jon Goode and a bucket by junior Woody Payne gave the Titans a 12-point advantage, 27-15, their largest lead of the game with eight minutes to play in the first half. Western Michigan would then go on a 13-5 run to end the period, cutting the Detroit lead to four, 32-28. The Broncos continued their offensive charge in the second half, though, outscoring UDM 22-6 through the first 11 minutes to go out in front by 12, 50-38.

Goode led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Hayes added 10 points and four rebounds, while Samarco netted 13 points, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. The Titans held Reitz, who came in averaging 21 points against Detroit, to just 14 points and three rebounds. The two-time all-MAC performer did hit 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. David Kool led the Broncos with 22 points, who recorded their first victory in Detroit since 1974.
