Kent State Picks up Key Win over MAC-West Leader Western Michigan, 67-58

KENT, Ohio — The Kent State men’s basketball team overcame a 10-point second half deficit to defeat MAC West leader Western Michigan 67-58 on Sunday at the M.A.C. Center. The win, Kent State’s 12th straight at home, gives the Golden Flashes a 16-4 overall record and a 5-1 conference record. The loss drops the Broncos to 10-9 and 4-2. The key to the Flashes’ comeback was a defensive performance that included holding Western Michigan to just 25.9 percent (7-31) shooting in the second half, including a 7:31 stretch without a field goal. For the game the Broncos shot just 36.5 percent (19-of-52) while committing 16 turnovers.

“To hold that type of a basketball team to 26 percent in the second half, is probably the best defense we can play,” said Head Coach Jim Christian. Junior Al Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J. (Redlands C.C.) led Kent State with team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior Mike Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. (Northwest) tallied 13 points and six rebounds while sophomore Rodriquez Sherman (Indianapolis, Ind. (Ben Davis) also added 12 points and five rebounds. In addition, Fisher finished with a team-high three assists and a game-high three steals. As a team, Kent State scored 20 points off of turnovers.

KSU got off to one its slowest starts of the season on Sunday as the Broncos jumped out to a 10-1 lead to start the game. However, the Kent State defense helped get the Flashes back into the contest by forcing seven first-half turnovers that helped spur on an 18-9 run that tied the game at 19 after Fisher hit his only three of day midway through the half. Scott and junior Rashad Woods (Houston, Texas (Lee College) combined to score eight points during the run. Woods finished the day with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and three rebounds. The Flashes took their first lead since 1-0 when Fisher drew a foul and proceeded to convert both foul shots to put Kent State up 26-25. The two MAC division leaders finished the half trading baskets with Western Michigan ending up with a three-point lead (34-31) heading into the break.

A second slow start plagued Kent State when Western Michigan built a 10-point lead (48-38) to begin the half. However, Sherman, who was making his first start since Dec. 29, came alive scoring 10 of Kent State’s next 14 points in part of a 14-2 run to take a 52-50 lead with just over five minutes to play. Once Kent State got the lead, the Flashes connected on 10 foul shots to help secure the 67-58 victory. In addition to Sherman’s offensive exploits and clutch foul shooting, was a defense that held the Broncos without a field goal for over seven minutes. The Broncos only managed to score eight points for the final 9:21 of the game. “They were in such a good rhythm, for like three possessions we just went zone to get them out of rhythm,” Christian said. “Then (we) went back to man and I think putting Jordan (Mincy) on David Kool was big for us because he’s going to chase screens and make him earn it, and that’s what Jordan does.” Western Michigan was led by David Kool who scored a game-high 21 points.
