Broncos Bust Falcons, 64-50

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Host Western Michigan University used timely shooting and relentless rebounding to open up a double-digit first-half lead, en route to a 64-50 win over the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2). The Mid-American Conference game was held at WMU's University Arena. With the win, the Broncos improve to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 10-10 and 5-3, respectively. BGSU saw a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. Redshirt freshman Chris Knight led the Falcons with 13 points, while junior Brian Moten scored 12 points off the bench. Joe Reitz paced the Broncos, with game-high totals of 21 points and nine rebounds. Andre Ricks also hit double digits for the home team, with 10 points off the bench.

The Broncos scored on each of their first five possessions of the game, opening up a 12-3 lead in that time. Western took a 7-0 lead, capped by a dunk by Andrew Hershberger. After junior Nate Miller got the Falcons on the scoreboard with a three-point field goal at the 17:30 mark, a Reitz three-point play was followed by a David Kool runner in the lane. When Ricks knocked down a jumper of his own, the Broncos' lead was 14-3, but the Falcons battled back. A three-point play by Knight sparked a 9-0 run, as the Falcons held WMU without a point for a span of 4:14 and without a field goal for 5:25. After Moten's bank shot in transition, the Falcons had cut the lead to 14-8. Then, the team's two true freshmen made connections, as Joe Jakubowski fed Cameron Madlock for a short jumper, and the deficit was four points. After a steal by junior Darryl Clements (and a media timeout), a jumper by sophomore Otis Polk cut the Bronco lead to just two points, 14-12, with 11:01 left in the half.

Western, however, would reel off the game's next six points, capped by Kool's layup on the break, and the Bronco advantage was back to eight points, at 20-12. Moten scored the next four points, taking a pass from Knight for a pump-fake layup, then hitting a difficult banker in transition, and BG was within 20-16. But, a Shawntes Gary jumper was followed by a Ricks three-pointer. Ricks' trey came after two missed opportunities for the Falcons from close range, and the hosts had a nine-point lead. A Knight jumper preceded two Clements free throws, and the Falcons were back to within five points, at 25-20, but BG could get no closer. WMU would go on a 9-1 run over the final 3:06 of the half, with a Reitz tip-in bringing the Broncos' lead to 34-21 at the intermission. In that first half, the Broncos had an 18-5 advantage in rebounding, with a 7-0 margin in offensive boards. The home team slowly pulled away in the second half. A triple by Derek Fracalossi gave the Broncos a 47-28 lead with 14 minutes remaining, and after a BG turnover, Martelle McLemore's jumper put the margin over 20 points for the first time.

The closest the Falcons could come was 13 points, when Miller's one-handed dunk got the visitors within 61-48 with 1:48 left. But, BG could narrow the gap no further. BG held a 21-14 rebounding advantage in the second half. For the game, the Broncos had 32 boards to the Falcons' 26. Western shot 46.0% from the field for the game, while the Falcons had a field-goal percentage of 40.9%. Both teams struggled from three-point land, with the Broncos going 4-for-14 and BG shooting 2-for-13. Clements had eight points for the Falcons, and also had a game-high three steals. Clements and Jakubowski had four assists apiece. Miller and Polk scored six points each, and Miller and Knight tied for team rebounding honors with six apiece. The Falcons had six blocked shots, with Miller owning two of those. For Western, five players had between five and seven points. Kool, who entered the game leading the MAC in scoring (18.0 ppg in conference games only), was held to seven points on 3-for-10 shooting.
