Huskies Return to Competition with 56-49 Loss to Broncos
Nichols' 16 points not enough to lead NIU to victory.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ó Western Michigan University avenged an earlier loss this season with a 70-52 win over a visiting Eastern Michigan University menís basketball team here Wednesday night in a Mid-American Conference West Division showdown in University Arena.

DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois held Western Michigan to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field, but the Huskies fell 56-49 to the Broncos, Tuesday at the Convocation Center. The game was the first home contest for a Northern Illinois team since the tragedy on Northern Illinois' campus, Feb. 14. Prior to the game, the five victims were remembered with a moment of silence, and both the NIU and WMU basketball players adorned their jerseys with red and black ribbons in their honor. On the court, junior guard Jarvis Nichols (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North/Pratt C.C.) scored 16 points to lead the Huskies, who shot 34.5 percent from the field.

Northern Illinois led by as many as eight in a back-and-forth affair that saw six lead changes and the score tied four times. The Broncos (17-10, 10-3 Mid-American Conference) snatched the lead for the final time when Andrew Hershberger hit a pair of free throws, putting his team ahead of NIU 46-44 with 2:34 remaining. After the teams exchanged lay-ups, Bronco David Kool hit a long three-pointer with two seconds left on the shot clock to put Western Michigan up five, 51-46, with 1:22 remaining. From there, the Broncos sunk five-of-six free throws to put the game away.

Egan Grafel (Oberlin, Kan./Decatur Community/Cloud County C.C.) chipped in 10 and Jake Anderson (Chicago, Ill./Carver Military Academy) scored eight for NIU. Anderson also tallied eight rebounds to go with five assists and two steals. Shaun Logan (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott/Kirkwood C.C.) blocked three shots in addition to pulling down eight rebounds. Kool was one of three Broncos in double-figures with 16 points. Hershberger registered 14, while Joe Reitz scored 12 in addition to tallying 15 rebounds.

The Huskies shot just one free throw in the second half, compared with 16 for the Broncos. NIU hit 62.5 percent of its tries from the line, while Western Michigan sunk 15-21 free throws (71.4 percent). Northern Illinois will host Central Michigan Saturday in the Convocation Center as part of a Huskie basketball double-header. The women tip-off against Eastern Michigan at 11 a.m., while the men open play against the Chippewas at 2 p.m. The first 500 fans in the doors for both games get a free I Heart NIU t-shirt.
