MBB Suffers Final Minute Loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - - The Ball State menís basketball team ended the 2007-08 regular season with a 57-53 loss at Western Michigan Sunday afternoon at University Arena. With the loss, the Cardinals move to 6-23 (5-11 MAC) on the season. Western Michigan climbs to 19-11 (12-4 MAC) with the victory. Ball State held a 53-50 advantage at the 2:23 mark after a bank-in triple from Anthony Newell, who tied for game-high honors with 19 points.

However, the Broncos scored the final seven points, including the final four in the last 36 seconds, to secure the Senior Day victory. Michael Redell sealed the WMU win with a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining, after not scoring since the 17:44 mark of the first half. Despite being out-sized by the 2007-08 MAC West Division Champions, the Cardinals held a 33 to 29 advantage on the boards. WMU entered the contest ranked first in the league and among the nationís leaders with a +5.1 rebounding margin. Malik Perry paced all players with seven boards in the contest, while Newell added six. BSU also limited Western Michiganís Joe Reitz to 14 points and a MAC season-low tying three rebounds. Reitz entered the contest ranked second in the league with an 8.1 rebounding average.

After dropping a 71-45 decision to the Broncos Jan. 16, the Cardinals were determined to keep the contest close, as they came out and scored the first five points, on a layup from Perry and a three-pointer from Brandon Lamply. Western Michigan responded with the next seven points, capped by Redellís lone basket of the night, a three-pointer. After a pair of made free throws by Perry, the Cardinals tied the game at 7-7. Unfortunately, WMU was able to post a few strong runs and pull ahead by as many as seven points at 24-17. Trailing by six points, at 32-26, with a little over three minutes remaining in the half, the Cardinals turned to Rashaun McLemore, who drained a momentum-building three and added a point from the line moments later to bring Ball State within two at 32-20.

Newell followed with a jumper with 44 second remaining in the half to tie the game at 32-all. Then, with one second on the clock, WMUís Derek Fracalossi launched a desperation jumper to beat the buzzer and give the hosts a 34-32 edge going into the locker room. The Broncos scored the first five points after the brake to pull ahead 39-32. With WMU holding an eight-point edge, 42-34, with 15:32 remaining in the game, the Cardinals defense came to life, holding the Broncos scoreless over the next 5:15. Utilizing the strong defensive play, the BSU offense was able to build on a Newell three and eventually cut the gap to one point at 42-41 after a Rob Giles jumper and another Perry layup.

After a Lamply layup tied the score at 45 with 7:12 remaining, a huge board from Peyton Stovall and a layup from Perry gave the Cardinals a 47-45 edge. David Kool, who led the Broncos with 19 points, tied the game moments later. A Newell free throw gave BSU a one-point lead at 48-47, with 5:18 left to play. Kool gave the hosts the lead back with 4:11 on the clock by draining a pair of free throws. Newell continued the battle of the gameís top scores with a lead-changing jumper, while an Andrew Hershberger free throw tied the game once again at 50.

Newell scored his final points of the game moments later with his bank-in three, while WMU scored the final seven points to win the game. Despite finishing the game with just six points, Ball Stateís Stovall climbed to 10th in program history with 1,370 career points.
